Explore the unpredictable and exciting world of alternative firing in this hands-on course. Students will build and prepare work while learning Traditional Raku for metallic and crackled surfaces, Naked Raku for bold black-and-white patterns, and horsehair and feather firing for delicate carbon markings.
The course will also cover burnishing techniques and Pi’s coffee-can sawdust reduction process, which uses sawdust and heat to create a smooth, shiny jet-black surface inspired by the celebrated pottery of Pueblo artist Maria Martinez.
The final sessions will focus on hands-on outdoor firings and the dramatic results created through fire, smoke, and reduction.
